Jazz magazine  

The masthead is blue, this is a cool colour which creates a sense of calm which is what jazz music does.It also is a convention of jazz magazines to use this colour.  This stands out on the black and white picture.It adds another  layer to the picture and makes it stand out of the page. The font is sans serif . The mastehead is also in the top left of the page . 

The image is very clear , and is of high quality this allows the magazine to charge a higher price . The image is black and white which a convention for jazz because it is used throughout many jazz magazines. It also has a solo artist male which is normally done with the genre. He is wearing a suit jacket which is a code for jazz. He is holding a trumpet which is also a code for jazz because its what most jazz music consists of . The star is an image which supports Dyer's theory . The star is very relaxed and looks causal however, they would not look like this in their everyday life.  He looks away from the camera which creates tension. 

The font is sans which breaks conventions for the genre of jazz because it is not normally used. The font ranges in size the main feature article is bold and big.  They range in colour . The blue text is more important. There is a box out which is in the shape of a circle which is very rare for a jazz magazine to have . 

There are 3 feature articles and 1 main feature article which is the main story inside .

How this research has influenced my planning and creativity?

• I love the photography I think i will use this  for my magazine 
• I dont like that there isnt much text on the cover 
• I like image the star creates

Research front cover 4+ and content page Acoustic

The masthead is at the top which is a code for magazines [Barthes].The masthead is in white and bold sans serif font, this makes the masthead more visible. They break conventions using the colour white for the masthead because it is not very bold on the background they use.By using the colour white it creates the image of the artist being very pure and kind, this links to the photo as well. The masthead goes over the stars head which creates the sense of they think it is more important however, I think they did this because of the colour scheme used.


The front cover image has the artist looking into the camera which follows conventions and codes of magazines [Barthes] she is pictured in looking over the shoulder shot. By having the artist looking into the camera it creates more of a relationship with her and makes her seem friendly. It presents the singer as innocent and sweet, this could link to the representation theory that how we are seen determines how we are treated (Dyer).This would suggest she would be treated nicer because of the way she is represented .She looks pretty which could suggest that she is like this for the male gaze (Mulvey).I think the image follows conventions reaching their target audience of around 20-30. She has a red jumper on which could represent her passion for music or her dangerous side beneath the sweet side. She is also pictured with a guitar this is to represent the magazine and her love for music , this is a convention of acoustic.

Sans serif is also used for the cover lines, the magazine mostly black for these this is to contrast the white font of the title and the cover story. The cover story is in white font this creates synergy with the masthead.There isn't much shown for the features of the magazine there are 3 feature articles and 1 main cover story. The magazine doesn't use any box outs.

The magazine is plain this is so all attention is on the artist.

  They use a very clean and organised set up, they use lots of images. The image quality is very good which will allow the magazine to charge a higher price. The main colour is white , this creates a brand image of a pure and sophisticated magazine. The brand name is the same font on each magazine and is normally in the same place .The text is organised in a simple way .  The text for the box out is done differently to the rest because it is made to stand out and draw attention to it because it is the main article. It is targeted to women on the cover however, the magazine itself is unisex. There is no pull quotes, the magazine is targeted to more of a middle and upper class because of the price and genre .

Font ideas for magazine  

 
I like this font I would use this font for my masthead because it is modern and different which is the image . It is fun and is targeted at the younger generation , I think this will add a more of a modern twist . I also like the shadowing used this would break conventions because shadowing is not normally used for a masthead .


 I like this style of font because it is very classic and is more sophisticated for the genre of Jazz. However, I dont like that this is a common style of font for a masthead for Jazz , the classic style of font is often used . If i was going to use this font i would use it for it for either a masthead or a headline for the main feature story .


This style of font is very sophisticated and very modern . It is plain and I dont feel like it would match my genre of jazz because I want to make my magazine more fun and different because people of the target audience of 16-20 because of how plain it is.

I like this font because of how fun it is. I would use this for a headline for a main feature article . However i would not use this for my masthead because it is thin and not bold enough to draw attention to my magazine.


I really like this font, i would use this for my masthead because it is very retro which would work really well for a jazz magazine. It is bold and different which is the style I want for my magazine , I want my magazine to be fun and different to the other jazz magazines .

Research Front cover analysis + Q (3)

 The masthead is Red and is in the left sides corner, this is a code for Q because it is like this every magazine this makes the magazine more recognizable .The masthead uses the colour red which suggests danger showing that the artists in the magazine are well known and have alot of power in the industry. it also represents the magazines passion for music.The masthead looks like it has been smashed by the star this presents an image of danger and enticement on why the star has done this . It gives off a rock vibe because of this its a sign of rebellion .The font is sans serif which is also a code for Q.


The central image shows the lead singer to be aggressive this shows the star as an image which supports Dyers theory . He is dressed in dark clothes which is a convention of rock, he is also smashing the guitar into the masthead which shows anger and rebellion which is another convention for rock. The image is  a medium long  shot . The image links to the genre of the magazine which is classic rock and alternative. I think the image breaks conventions because it does not match the target audience of 20-40 . Its more of a a male cover because of the colours used and the anger in the photo.

The font used is sans serif for the cover lines.
The cover shows a variation of colours this helps the magazine to stand out because its on a dark back ground.The front cover is busy this shows there is alot of conent inside which allows Q to charge a higher price. Q also uses a box out for some names of artist to help it stand out to show people what they are buying.They use a second image on the magazine front cover of a well known band to show Q has big artists inside.They use '200 things you didn know...' to make it seems like an exclusive about the band. The front cover has 1 main feature article and around 4 feature articles. Some writing is bigger than others which means Q want to get the important and more popular bands seen first.This also supports Mulveys theory about woman are viewed for the pleasure of men, however, the lead singer from muse is for the pleasure of woman instead.

How this research has influenced my planning and creativity?

• I like the style of font used on the front cover
• I dont like how busy the magazine is and will try make mine less like this
• I like how the magazine changed the masthead to fit in more with the artist they are covering
• I like how this magazine uses the box outs to display names.
• I like the pain background

Wire 

The masthead is a light colour to blend with the background , it uses pastel colours which are in fashion at the moment. It is very spaced out between the letters. I think the masthead breaks conventions because it isnt bright and bold like magazines normally have their mastheads . The font is sans serif this gives the magazine a more modern look.The font style is a code for Wire magazine [Barthes] .

The image used is very modern , the photographer uses lighting to present a more modern magazine .It adds layers to the image and shows the quality of the magazine.Its very clear and sharp. Just from the image I know that this is a high quality magazine. The image is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye . The shirt she wears looks dirty and and is tie dyed to look as if she's been doing something eg art / painting . They present the singer has an artist who works with paint instead of a music artist. She looks like she's admiring her work she just created. She looks intimidating which breaks conventions because of the genre of her music and the colours used. It presents the artist as a strong independent woman which is the new image of women [Barthes] .This is because she is wearing a males shirt and has her hair short which is not normally done. The lighting is brighter on the center of her face  which draws attention to her impression and the artist her self. They have blurred the background of the photograph to show all focus is on her.  She breaks conventions just by looking away from the camera. This breaks the convention of Laura Mulveys theory , that women are viewed for the pleasure of male pleasure. This is because of how she is presented as strong and independent and wearing baggy clothes.   The barcode is on the side of this magazine which breaks a convention because it is normally on the bottom on a magazine. 

The font is sans serif , this creates a very modern look. The sans serif font is a code [Barthes]for the magazine since they use this style on each cover. The text is very spread out which creates a very modern and stylist image.It shows the quality of the magazine which means they can charge a higher price .  The colour of the font is white which pops out of the page due to the colour background it is on . The colour scheme for this issue is mainly light colours. Some of the writing is in capital letters which makes it bold.


How this research has influenced my planning and creativity?

• I love the photography I think i will use this  for my magazine 
• I dont like that there isnt much text on the cover 
• I also really like the letters being more spaced out 
• I dont like the masthead not being as bold as it is on some other magazine. '

Research- Front Cover Research 1+ Uncut

Uncut 

The masthead is red which makes it stand it on the black and white black ground. It is a harsh colour which is a code for rock . It is a classic rock magazine so having the harsh colour helps with the genre of the magazine. Red gives off a sense of danger and rebellion, which links to the convention of rock. The masthead is behind the photo so is covered up which suggests this magazine is well known because people will still recognise it even if it is covered . It breaks convention because there is a shadow to the font.This is not normally used in mastheads , so it breaks the conventions . The font is sans serif , it looks like the edges have been cut which links with the name 'uncut'. It doesn't take all the lenght of the front cover it is moved to the side to make room for a banner. 

The image is very busy there is alot going on. It is black and white which is very  retro, vintage and classic which matches the theme of classic rock. The picture is all the background which makes it focused on by the readers . The artists are wearing leather jackets is a code for classic rock, the long hair is a code for retro . The image shows a very classic and traditional rock n roll / punk look. The star is an image which supports Dyer's theory . The star is very relaxed and looks causal however, they would not look like this in their everyday life. The sun glasses  makes the two members look intimidating .

The font of the band name is bigger than the cover lines, this is to draw attention to the main article . The colours range so they stand out on the black and white background. This is good because the cover lines pop out of the page.  It adds another layer to the front cover. Having a black and white background with either black or white font would look plain.

There are six cover stories on the front cover and one main feature article this gives an insight to the reader of what is in the magazine. There are many puffs used, 1-2-3-4 is used before the band name. This gives the sound of when a band start a concert or are introducing the start of a song they are performing . Another puff used is free this makes the reader feel like they will gain something from buying the magazine. The magazine uses a banner to promote the weekly features of the magazine . They dont have a slogan however, they have lyrics at the top  of the magazine .


How this research has influenced my planning and creativity ?

• I like the black and white background i plan on using this on my own magazine.
• I dont like the masthead being partly covered because it doesnt make the magazine desirable since people might not recognise it .
• I like the fonts being in a bright colour against the black and white background because it stands out more .
• I dont like the poses the artist has used since they look very intimating which  i dont want for my magazine.
